The number one piece of equipment behind your gun is your radio. Without comms there is no "Coordinating Instructions". There are several really good radios on the market but if you really want to get tacticool then you need accessories to go along with them.
Cost always gets in the way, though, when we buy a piece of gear that we won't use for anything other than military simulations (like there's something other than milsim!). So we end up getting something less than professional quality but looks the same as the real thing. What we've all come to realize is that if you buy a piece of equipment that looks like the real thing but isn't then it ends up breaking down at the moment of truth.
Honestly, there are several "professional grade" radios and accessories that will let you down just when you need them most. That's from experience. I have never minded spending the extra money to make sure our comms are squared away. For the radio (encrypted), throat mic, cables, ear piece and push to talk (PTT) you can expect to spend a little less than $1000 per person.
So we've established that you need quality gear in the field that looks cool but you don't want or need to spend a ton of money on professional grade equipment. So where do you go?
Klein Electronics (KE) may have the answer. Everyone knows that the KE Black Box 2-way radio is a great piece of gear but what you may not know is they have an excellent array of accessories that are not only compatible with their radios but with the Motorola radios as well. In fact, Klein has just put together THE tactical comms kit complete with Modular Pro-Tactical Throat Mic, Modular Junction Box, Modular Connector Cable, Modular Ring Finger PTT and ArmorCase radio carrier built around the Black Box 2-way radio! You can certainly put together all the pieces of this kit by buying the individual parts but you're still going to pay over $350. That's a great deal but you can buy the kit for $299!
You have the option of UHF or VHF but for field work I recommend that you go the UHF route. VHF has a little better sound quality but it's really more of a line of site radio. As far as the accessories are concerned: I used that equipment instead of my "professional" quality gear on a detail this last week and it is not only durable but comfortable as well.
If you're serious about MilSim then you need great comm gear and you'd be hard pressed to do better than the Klein Electronics Tactical Communications Kit for the price.
Try it out and let me know what you think.
